Check out this glossary of words if you work with an automated storage system, vertical lift module or vertical carousel in your factory, distribution centre or warehouse and aren’t familiar with the many components of vertical storage systems.
Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)
The Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) is a group of software-controlled devices for automatically storing and retrieving inventories.
Clear Height
The amount of space above a building’s ceiling that is unobstructed by HVAC pipes and equipment, lighting fixtures and other objects.
Carrier
The unique storage compartment of a system. When a tray or a shelf isn’t available, it’s sometimes used instead.
Ergonomics
Ergonomics refers to the process of bringing all parts to the “golden zone” (the area between the shoulders and the waist) for picking in vertical storage systems. Employees that use the vertical storage system on a daily basis will experience fewer workplace injuries and have increased job satisfaction as a result of improved ergonomics. Vertical storage systems and vertical carousels keep supplies at worktable height, removing the need for users to bend over, reach for a high shelf, or climb ladders to get what they need.
Cube
The volume of storage space is accessible in three dimensions; that is, considering a facility’s available cubic space rather than just its square area.
Heavy Duty
Medium and heavy-duty operations are those that need more than one shift over a five-day workweek. If you’re working three shifts seven days a week, you should acquire new equipment rather than use it. When it comes to reducing the risk of failures and downtime, buying new equipment is generally the best option. Buying used equipment and materials makes more sense if you’re operating on a light or medium-duty schedule.
Kardex

Hanel
Hanel is a vertical storage system manufacturer based in Europe. Two types are available: the Hanel Rotomat and the Hanel Lean Lift.
Modula
Modula is a vertical storage system manufacturer based in the United States and Europe. Two variants are available: the Modula Lift and the Modula Sintes1.

Tray
The unique storage space of a system. Used in place of a carrier or a shelf occasionally.
A vertical carousel is a vertical storage device with a fixed shelf height. Take a look at a miniature enclosed Ferris wheel.
Shelf
A shelf is an individual storage area in a system. When a tray or a carrier isn’t available, it’s sometimes used instead.
Vertical Lift Module / VLM
Vertical Lift Module is an automated storage system with customizable shelf heights that works in the same way as a tall storage system with an elevator in the middle of two storage zones.
Vertical Lift Sequencer / VLS
A vertical lift sequencer (VLS) can provide the speed, efficiency, and precision required for activities with a large number of items or parts SKUs. In distribution facilities and warehouses, VLS units serve as a buffer between production and order fulfilment. The VLS uses buffer sequencers to automatically segregate fast-moving SKUs from packages intended for palletizing stations, providing for the most efficient split-case picking.

Automated storage systems that take advantage of the cube include a vertical lift module and a vertical carousel.
Warehouse Control System (WCS)
In order to properly direct and supervise automated material handling and operations within the storage facility, a warehouse control system (WCS) receives real-time data from material processing equipment and devices, as well as warehouse management system (WMS) software.
WCS manages the automation equipment in warehouses and distribution centres by integrating with WMS/ERP systems. The software is designed to connect the client’s WMS/ERP system to the equipment.
Warehouse Management System (WMS)
A WMS (Warehouse Management System) is a piece of software that helps you manage your storage facility. The transportation and storage of commodities within a warehouse is controlled by a warehouse management system (WMS). The WMS is in charge of picking and storage, as well as shipping and receiving.
